Can’t stop snoring? Your fat tongue might be to blame
A new cause of snoring, which for many people is a great annoyance, has been identifies by scientists. Scientists have discovered that the tongues of people who snore are extra large. It explains why large necks were blamed for snoring and other sleep disorders.
Obesity is well known to increase the risk of obstructive sleep apnoea. Now, scientists have further identified that being overweight will lead to fat deposition in the tongue. The fat at the base of the tongue prevents positioning of the tongue away from the airways. The result is blockage of the airways causing snoring. Tongue size can thus be evaluated when screening for sleep apnoea.
