Sleep Specialists

As a Dentist you have great potential for helping people with their sleeping problems. With an estimated 30% of adults snoring, and increasing to 60% over the age of 60, there will be patients that you see everyday who could greatly benefit from the Somnowell Chrome. However, research shows that only 7% of people would think to ask their dentist for help.

The Somnowell Chrome

The Somnowell Chrome Mandibular Advancement Appliance is an extremely comfortable and effective long-term solution in the professional management of snoring and obstructive sleep apnoea.

The Somnowell Chrome gently holds the lower jaw forward and maintains an open airway whilst the patient sleeps. It has a titratable telescopic piston rod on the left and right hand side of the chrome cobalt framework. This can be adjusted for maximum patient comfort and effectiveness.

Somnowell Chrome Results

Over 90% of patients report successful treatment. 83% report improved quality sleep. 51% report improved energy levels. 40% report improved concentration.

Advantages

Plastic devices tend to be bulky and uncomfortable, and can quickly become smelly and unsightly. Plastic devices by their very nature require regular replacement, typically within 18-36 months.

Because the Somnowell Chrome is made from super alloy chrome cobalt it is small and discreet. It is significantly less bulky than other mandibular advancement devices currently available, making it very comfortable for the patient to wear. This improved comfort has led to excellent patient compliance. The chrome cobalt is highly impervious to oral flora and is therefore more hygienic.

Inventor

The inventor is Visiting Professor Simon Ash, a Consultant and Specialist Orthodontist with over 30 years experience, who specialises in sleep related breathing disorders. Professor Ash practices in London and receives referrals from Consultants in Chest Medicine, such as Professor Michael Roberts, Professor Michael Polkey, Dr S. Quatrill, and Dr M D Darmalingam. He also receives referrals from a number of ENT Consultants, notably Mr Mike Dilkes, Mr Mike Papesch, and Mr Abir Bhattacharyya.

He has successfully treated thousands of patients, including royalty, celebrities, professors, and many medical professionals themselves.

LondonLife

In this short 7 minute program Visiting Professor talks about the Somnowell Chrome appliance and treats a patient. Two Consultant ENT Surgeons, Mr. Mike Dilkes and Mr. Sherif Habashi, also give their opinion of the Somnowell Chrome appliance.

Clinical Overview

To make a Somnowell Chrome device a dental practitioner needs to send us impressions of the upper and lower teeth, a forward postured bite, and a facebow recording. Visiting Professor Ash personally leads the production and support for all the Somnowell Chrome Practitoners. The Somnowell Chrome is manufactured in our laboratories and then dispatched to the dental practitioner for fitting.

Each Somnowell Chrome device is supplied with a 5 year guarantee against manufacturing defects.

Referrals

We believe that it is critically important for the clinicians to be part of multi-disciplinary teams, and should not work in isolation. Often patients require a definitive diagnosis by the appropriate specialist, and may on occasion require an alternative treatment. Our goal is to promote the development of successful multi-disciplinary teams.

We also market the Somnowell Chrome directly to patients, however we only manufacture and deliver devices to registered practitioners.

Dr. Brian Clarke, Bayswater Dental Practice: "I highly recommend this MAA"

Being a snorer myself, I’d been involved with Mandibular Advancement Appliances for some years before I’d been introduced to Professor Simon Ash and the Somnowell MAA. Plastic appliances, fixed anteriorly were “a mouthful” and uncomfortable, aggravated dribbling over the pillow and made speech near impossible. They were not well tolerated.

The Somnowell Co/Cr MAA was a revelation. Comfortable, hygienic, I could speak normally, take a drink at night – and it works!

Over the last ten years, I’ve treated nearly 200 patients with this MAA. Even patients that had been diagnosed with apnoea and snoring and advised to use CPAP, have been successfully using the Somnowell MAA.

We are looking after ‘human beings’ and can never guarantee 100% effectiveness – though all have been content with the result. It’s refreshing to hear that the sleeping partners can comfortably sleep together in the same room again!

Somnowell’s referral system works effectively and the laboratory are making a quality appliance. There is a learning curve in diagnosing a patient’s mouth, in the face-bow and the mandibular advancement recording, so Prof Ash’s introduction course is advised. I highly recommend this MAA.

Dr. Athyr Al-Killidar, Orthodontist and Director at UK Smile: "most effective mandibular advancement device"

I have been using custom-made plastic mandibular advancement devices in the management of snoring and sleep apnoea since 1999, and whereas results have been consistently positive in patients who wore the appliances, they had the following limitations:

1) They were relatively unhygienic, discoloured and developed a smell after some time in the oral environment;
2) The thickness of plastic required to make them strong enough to last, made them quite bulky, so encroached on the tongue space and necessitated a larger anterior movement of the mandible to make them effective;
3) The vertical opening of the mouth caused by the thickness of the plastic and necessity to maintain some opening at the front of the mouth to maintain an airway, was often beyond the patient's capacity to maintain a lip seal - this meant a greater likelihood of a dry mouth and dribbling throughout the night;
4) Changing the amount of mandibular advancement was always difficult;
5) The plastic often degraded over time and breakages were common after a few years;
6) The various designs all limited lateral movements of the TMJ to the extent that they approached fixation, and I have reservations about the long term effects of this on TMJ health.

Then the Somnowell Chrome appliance came along (thanks to Simon) and addressed all of the above, and the feedback from patients has been unanimous - it is the least uncomfortable, most effective mandibular advancement device currently available…
