Young Football Players Getting Bigger, Developing Higher Risk of Sleep Apnoea

american footballThe American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) recommends that parents, coaches and school administrators should have young football players tested for obstructive sleep apnoea.

Studies have shown that the young football players despite healthy diets and physical fitness are growing bigger and are often classified as obese depending on parameters such as height and weight. One in five linemen in high school football is morbidly obese and this is a risk factor of obstructive sleep apnoea.

M. Safwan Badr, president of AASM says that it is critical that sleep apnoea is detected and treated early especially in these young athletes. It will reduce incidence of high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease and mortalities in later life.
