Why Sleep Apnoea is Bad News for Your Kidneys

kidneyPatients with type 2 diabetes are at a greater risk of developing kidney disease since their kidneys are usually overworked. Other factors that lead to kidney disease are poor blood sugar control and high blood pressure commonly associated with diabetes.

People with type 2 diabetes are also found to have obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA). A recent study of patients with diabetes and chronic kidney disease reveals that 61 percent of patients who score high on the OSA screening tests also had significantly lower kidney function.

People with diabetes should visit their doctor and discuss the risk of kidney disease and obstructive sleep apnoea. The early diagnosis and treatment of diabetes will lower the risk of these conditions.
