Why Kids with Down Syndrome are at High Risk for Obstructive Sleep Apnoea

The American Academy of Pediatrics has recommended that children with Down syndrome should have a sleep study by 4 years of age. Children with Down syndrome are at high risk for obstructive sleep apnoea, it is estimated that 50-75% of these children develop OSA. The reasons are the relatively large tongue and adenoid tissue, and low muscle tone in the upper airway.
