smileDentists are seeing large numbers of young adults with severely damaged teeth seeking dental attention at their practices. The damage is not linked to poor nutrition and poor dental hygiene. Stress has been the chief cause of damaged teeth. Stress causes bruxism/teeth grinding and jaw clenching at night.

Dr. M. B. Aswath Narayanan, head of Public Health Dentistry, Tamil Nadu Government Dental College, says that the stress problem can be seen in working adults as well as younger adults in high schools and higher education institutions. Treatment has thus been focused on treating the causes of stress and on how to handle stress in addition to the dental procedures. Eliminating stress will mean that the symptoms of bruxism will be eliminated, resulting in improved dental health.
