Untreated Sleep-Disordered Breathing: Links to Aging-Related Decline in Sleep-Dependent Memory Consolidation

dementiaThe study was undertaken to find out the effects of advancing age on sleep dependent motor memory consolidation in patients with and without OSA. Age has been associated with a decline in cognition and motor skills and the increased risk of getting obstructive sleep apnoea.

Several studies have tried to find out the link between sleep and memory. Consistent to the findings of the previous studies, this particular study shows that untreated obstructive sleep apnoea is associated with an aging-related cognitive deficit which is not seen in people without OSA. OSA has also been thought to increase the risk of developing dementia.
