Type 2 Diabetes? Hypertension? Get Tested for Sleep Apnoea!
The American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) has issued a recommendation that people who suffer Type 2 diabetes or hypertension should be evaluated for obstructive sleep apnoea. Diabetes and hypertension affects a large part of the population and hence the new guideline will have a big impact on the health of the population.
Estimates show that approximately half of the people with high blood pressure also suffer from OSA. With Type 2 diabetes sleep apnoea is an even bigger problem. Sleep apnoea is associated with higher risk and occurrence of cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Early intervention ensures that these problems are tackled before they even begin.
