Treatment of Obstructive and Central Sleep Apnoea in Heart Failure: Practical Options

Heart failure is a common problem associated with morbidity and mortality and economical impact. A number of factors contribute to the problem. Sleep apnoea is one such cause mostly seen in heart failure patients. Studies have shown that both obstructive (OSA) and central sleep apnoea (CSA) are common conditions in patients with systolic heart failure.

Early diagnosis and treatment of sleep-related breathing disorders is emphasized so that it leads to improved cardiac structure and cardiac function, and reduced morbidity and mortality of patients with heart failure. CPAP therapy is the preferred treatment for OSA especially in patients with heart failure.
