Treating Acute Insomnia: A Randomized Controlled Trial of a “Single-Shot” of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia
Significant amounts of evidence support the use of cognitive behavioral therapy in the treatment of chronic insomnia. However, the use of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) has remained unproven in the treatment of acute insomnia. Forty four adults who had a mean age of 32.9 years were recruited for the study. The adults recruited had no previous exposure to CBT and who were not taking any sleep medication.
The results of the study showed no difference in Insomnia Severity Index baseline scores and subjective sleep continuity as completed in the sleep diaries. The conclusion of the trial was that a single session of cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) is sufficiently efficacious for a significant proportion of those with acute insomnia.
