The Surprising Benefit of Keeping a Consistent Sleep Schedule

timing and schedulingResearchers at Brigham Young University conducted a study to learn more about the connection between sleep and weight by looking at the timing, quality and quantity of sleep. Compromised sleep quality and the lack of sleep or inadequate sleep lead to an increase in the levels of two hormones, ghrelin and leptin.

Results from the study indicated that people who slept for 6.5 or less or more than 8.5 hours of sleep per night had higher amounts of body fat. The researchers also found out that consistent bedtimes and especially wake time were associated with lower body fat. A 90 minute variation in sleep/wake times caused higher body fat levels when compared to a 60 minute variation.
