Study Suggests Sleep Apnoea in Young Children Common after Adenotonsillectomy
Can sleep apnoea occur on children? Yes it can. A recent study of children younger than 3 years of age with obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) suggests that many of them will have residual OSA after adenotonsillectomy intended to treat it. Although adenotonsillectomy leads to a dramatic improvement in this age group, a high proportion of this population will have residual OSA. Future research should focus on prospective evaluation of a large cohort of younger children with OSA for whom the extent of the disease is documented preoperative and postoperatively.
