Study Links Sleep to Mood Disturbance, Poor Quality of Life in Obese

overweightA study undertaken with 270 patients who had a mean body mass index (BMI) of 47.0 kg/m2 and were enrolled for a specialist weight management service has given important and useful results. The group was asked to fill standardised questionnaires to assess sleep disturbance, daytime sleepiness, mood and quality of life.

Notable results were that 74.8 percent of participants were poor sleepers averaging six hours and 20 minutes. It was noted that for age, sex, hypertension, diabetes, and obstructive sleep apnoea, sleep quality and daytime sleepiness were significantly associated with mood disturbance and quality of life impairment. Dr. M. Safwan Badr, President of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, says that the study emphasises the need to conduct thorough screening for sleep problems for people with severe obesity.
