Sociodemographic Characteristics and Waking Activities and their Role in the Timing and Duration of Sleep

Sleep ProblemChronic sleep deprivation is a prevalent problem within the U.S. population and is associated with the resultant increase in morbidity and mortality. The study sought to use population data on time usage to identify human characteristic and behaviors associated with sleep deprivation. These characteristics and behaviors will be targeted for intervention measures.

The findings are that any intervention to improve sleep times should aim at delaying morning start times of work and educational activities. Other interventions are improving and increasing sleep opportunities, reducing the need for multiple jobs, and reducing commute times in the morning and evening. Finally, awareness on the importance of adequate sleep for health should be improved.
