snoring manSnoring and sleep apnoea can be as a result of a number of factors that may be inherited or acquired. The main causes of sleep apnoea and snoring are:

  •     Obesity
  •     Neurological control of breathing during sleep
  •     Neck circumference that is caused by fatty deposits around the neck
  •     The upper airway anatomy and head and facial features
  •     Lifestyle factors such as smoking or alcohol consumption

Among these different causes of sleep apnoea and snoring, obesity can be a condition that is both inherited and as a result of social factors and behavioral factors. Head and facial features as well as the anatomy of the upper airways are inherited factors and are a big risk for snoring and sleep apnoea.
