Sleepless Nights, Sleepy Days
Excessive snoring may be a sign and indicator of obstructive sleep apnoea. This sleep disorder goes undiagnosed and untreated with serious health implications. OSA is characterised by repeated apnoeas (paused breathing) lasting 20 to 40 seconds. Paused breathing is a direct result of muscles in the throat relaxing and narrowing or completely closing the airways.
OSA patients wake up in the morning feeling tired and will be sleepy and lethargic throughout the day. Other symptoms of sleep apnoea are debilitating and may include the onset of diabetes, hypertension, and stroke. There are several different options for treatment including the use of mandibular advancement appliances.
