Sleep Disorders Costing Us Billions, National Study Reveals

dollarStudies indicate that sleep disorders cost the Australian economy an estimated 1.2 billion dollars an year. The cost has been broken down to $66 million in healthcare costs, $133 million for the medical conditions associated with accidents brought about by sleep loss, and approximately $1 billion in non-medical costs and loss of productivity.

It is further postulated that there is a very large non-financial cost that is caused by untreated sleep disorders. Sleep disorders have continually been ignored in the planning for preventive health strategies. Examples of sleep disorders are sleep apnoea and insomnia.
