Sleep Disorder Health Services Unable to Meet Needs of Patients

queueA report published by the British Medical Journal indicates that sleep disorder services will be under great pressure as obesity increases within the population and as the population continues to age.

Using data from the British Lung Foundation to evaluate sleep apnoea treatment centers across the UK, it was identified that:

·         Only 50 out of 289 centres provided full diagnosis for sleep problems.

·     The variation in diagnostic sleep studies per 1,000 people varies widely which is the highest ever studied in respiratory healthcare.

The study authors reported that this was a source of concern owing to the low rate of symptom recognition and the lack of services and referral facilities.
