Sleep ‘Detoxes’ the Brain, New Research Suggests

According to a study undertaken by researchers at the University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC), the brain functions differently while we are asleep to rid itself of accumulated proteins. Maiken Nedergaard, M.D., who chaired the study identified the glymphatic system in mice through high tech imaging which drains waste from the brain. The ability of sleep to detox the brain reduces the risk of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.
