Sleep Deprivation Increases Food Purchasing the Next Day

food shoppingA new study indicates that people experiencing sleep deprivation often bought more calories and grams of food. The study undertaken by researchers from Sweden sought to identify how sleep deprivation alters food purchasing choices. The hypothesis was that sleep deprivation affected decision making and impacted on hunger.

Colin Chapman, MSc, the first author in presenting the study says sleep deprivation increases levels of gherlin, the hunger hormone. After a night of total sleep deprivation, subjects purchased more calories and grams. With the findings, it is evident that healthy sleep schedules will help lower caloric intake and will help towards maintenance of normal body weight.
