Sleep Awareness Week – Focus on OSA
Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is a sleep disorder that could lay the foundation for poor health. Untreated OSA has been linked to adverse health and poor quality of life.
The underlying causes of OSA vary from individual to individual. The use of sedatives to treat OSA symptoms may reduce symptoms in some people and worsen symptoms in other people.
Sedatives weaken muscles in the upper airway which leads to the worsening of the condition. The sleeping pills also decrease the ability of an individual to awake with obstruction of the airway. The effect is that obstruction in breathing is prolonged leading to very low blood oxygen levels that are health threatening.
