Sleep Apnoea Sufferers 7 Times More Likely To Fall Asleep At the Wheel
According to the Road Safety Authority, 146 people have been killed on roads in Ireland. Statistics from the RSA also reveal that fatigue and excessive sleepiness contribute to one out of every five collisions on the road. Individuals suffering from sleep apnoea are seven times more likely to fall asleep when at the wheel.
However, the good news is that sleep apnoea can be treated effectively. Prof Walter McNicholas, director of the pulmonary and sleep disorders unit at St Vincent’s University Hospital, advises people should be aware of the signs of sleep apnoea to assist in making an early diagnosis.
