Sleep Apnoea Linked To Poor Aerobic Fitness

aerobicsA new study conducted by researchers at the San Diego School of Medicine, University of California has revealed that people with moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnoea may have an intrinsic inability to burn high amounts of oxygen during strenuous aerobic exercise. The likelihood of suffering from obesity is higher in OSA patients implying that they are less fit.

The study involving fifteen men and women with varying symptoms of sleep apnoea required them to pedal a stationary bike to exhaustion. The maximum amount of oxygen the person can uptake during strenuous exercise (VO2 max) was measured and the deviance from expected VO2 max was recorded. OSA patients had a fourteen percent lower VO2 max.
