Sleep Apnoea Linked to Kidney Disease

kidneyAn observational study showed that obstructive sleep apnoea is a minor contributor to kidney damage. Severe hypoxic events caused by obstructive sleep apnoea are thought to lead to kidney damage.

According to Oreste Marrone, MD, from the Institute of Biomedicine and Molecular Immunology of the National Research Council in Palermo, Italy, the lowest oxygen saturation reached at night could be used to significantly predict chronic kidney disease.

Potential mechanisms that indicate a causal link to kidney damage could be intermittent hypoxia, hypertension, metabolic abnormalities, and sympathetic hyperactivity. These mechanisms are common in OSA patients and its associated comorbidities such as diabetes and cardiovascular disorders.

Sleep Apnoea Linked to Kidney Disease

kidneyAn observational study indicates that obstructive sleep apnoea owing to the severe hypoxic events might lead to kidney damage. It has been pointed out that OSA is a contributor to kidney damage. The low oxygen saturation in OSA episodes is a predictor of chronic kidney disease.

According to Oreste Marrone, MD, from the National Research Council in Palermo, Italy, low oxygen saturation caused below average estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR). OSA is a minor contributor compared to other causes such as age, diabetes, gender, hypertension, and body mass index. The risk of kidney damage is higher for OSA patients with the comorbid conditions such as hypertension and diabetes.
