Sleep Apnoea in the Elderly
A study of sleep apnoea in the elderly has received acclaim for the robust and real life trial. The study was able to provide some insight into sleep disorders among the elderly and their consequences. However, some discrepancies were noted in the study results. The inclusion criteria based on overnight desaturation index (ODI) and Epworth Sleepiness Scores (ESS) was faulted in identifying hypoxic patients.
Another discrepancy highlighted was the mean usage of CPAP in the intervention group which was below the recommended time. Mean CPAP usage was two hours compared the recommended four to six hours. Lastly, the study did not indicate any improvement in cognitive function with CPAP treatment in this group.
