Sleep Apnoea and Heart Disease

How does sleep apnoea worsen heart disease? Many researchers have searched for answers to this question. A new study by researchers at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, USA has found that although SA does raise daytime blood pressure, this cannot explain the increased heart disease risk on its own. They have found that people with SA show a reduction in the tone of the vagus nerve, which traverses most of the body and also serves the heart. Once the vagus nerve becomes less active which occurs with sleep apnoea, it may increase the risk for heart disease.
