Sleep Apnoea and Depression
Sleep apnoea and depression are two conditions that share symptoms such as sleepiness, irritability, fatigue, and difficulty in concentrating. As matter of fact, sleep apnoea and depression are conditions that frequently co-exist. Health practitioners treating depression should also screen for sleep apnoea.
It is estimated that 30 to 50 percent of individuals with OSA have depression. It is therefore very easy for doctors treating depression to miss the symptoms of depression. On the other hand, antidepressant use in treatment of depression may worsen obstructive sleep apnoea. The medications for depression will often cause weight gain which in turn worsens the symptoms of OSA.
