Sleep and Sickness Absence: A Nationally Representative Register-Based Follow-Up Study

sleepThe study on the nationally representative health 2000 survey linked with sickness absence was aimed at examining the various sleep measures that determine sickness absence as well as looking at the confounders.

The study examined factors such as early morning awakenings, excessive daytime tiredness, insomnia-related symptoms, use of sleeping pills, fatigue, varying sleep duration at different seasons and probable sleep apnoea episodes. The results were when adjusted for age; all of these factors except daytime sleepiness were associated with sickness absence in men. Sickness absence in women was associated with early morning awakenings, insomnia related symptoms, and use of sleeping pills.
