The Signs and Symptoms of TMJ Disorder

neck painTemporomandibular joint disorder is a problem which affects the jaw joints which connect the jaw to the skull. The root cause of temporomandibular joint disorder is not clear but can be as a result of arthritis or physical trauma.

Symptoms of TMJ disorder include:

  • Tooth grinding
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Clogged ears
  • Tension in the neck
  • Diminished ability to open jaw
  • Sensitive teeth and gums
  • Clicking or popping sound in the joint

Treatment should be sought immediately any of these symptoms are noticed. A combination of exercise and stress-reduction can be good treatment for mild TMJ disorder. In severe cases, surgery is sometimes preferred.
