Severity of Sleep Apnoea Predicts Aggressiveness of Melanoma

skinA new study presented at the European Respiratory Society (ERS) annual congress indicates that the severity of sleep apnoea can be used to independently predict the aggressiveness of a malignant skin melanoma. The findings of the research add to the growing evidence linking sleep disorders and cancer.

For the first time, researchers worked with a human sample. 56 patients diagnosed with malignant skin melanomas were recruited and the researchers measured the aggressiveness of the condition against the presence and severity of sleep apnoea.

Severity was measured as:

·         The growth rate of the tumour and

·         The depth of invasion of the tumour

Dr Francisco Campos-Rodriguez, the lead author of the study, believes the findings will open up new therapeutic possibilities for patients with both conditions.
