Severity of Sleep Apnoea Impacts Risk of Resistant High Blood Pressure
A recent study indicates the presence of the link between severe untreated obstructive sleep apnoea and the risk of high blood pressure despite the use of antihypertensives. The study further reported that the risk of resistant high blood pressure was four times greater in patients with severe untreated OSA even after adjusting for body mass index, diabetes mellitus, and cardiovascular disease.
OSA contributes to the poor control of high blood pressure despite the aggressive use of medication. It then means that high blood pressure that is resistant to treatment with medications is a strong warning sign for the presence of OSA which is a chronic disease that increases the risk of stroke and heart disease.
