Risk of Sleep Apnoea in Hospitalized Older Patients

coupleA study has been carried out to evaluate the prevalence of undiagnosed obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) among general medical in-patients and to investigate whether OSA risk is associated with in-hospital sleep quantity and quality.

The study recruited 424 hospitalized adult patients who were 50 years old and older. The study subjects should not have had a sleep disorder diagnosis. Sleep duration and efficiency were measured via wrist actigraphy and the Berlin questionnaire was used to evaluate the patients. It was found that 2 out of 5 inpatients older than 50 years were at high risk of OSA and had worse in-hospital sleep quantity and quality.
