The Relationship Between CPAP Usage and Corneal Thickness
Sleep disordered breathing is characterized by episodes of sleep apnoea and hypopnoea, oxygen desaturation and frequent arousal. The most common form of sleep disordered breathing is obstructive sleep apnoea caused by collapsed airway. Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) is the first line of treatment for OSA.
Corneal thickness is affected by insufficient REM sleep. REM sleep ensures that eye movement in sleep will lead to proper corneal oxygenation. It was found that corneal thickness increased in OSA patients owing to decreased REM sleep caused by frequent awakening. The study showed that there was increased corneal thickness in OSA patients who did not use CPAP therapy.
