Poor Sleep Quality Linked to Cognitive Decline in Older Men

A study of 2,822 community-dwelling older men in six clinical centres across the U.S. has identified a link between poor sleep quality and the decline in cognitive ability over a three to four year period. It is the quality of sleep and not the quantity of sleep that causes cognitive decline.

The findings of the study indicate that high amounts of fragmented sleep and low sleep efficiency brought about a 40 to 50 percent increase in the probability of decline in executive function. These effects are equivalent to the effect of a five year increase in age. Sleep is a pillar of optimal cognitive functioning and a pillar of healthy life.
