Poor Sleep Doubles Hospitalisations in Heart Failure Patients

911New research has revealed that poor sleep will often cause a two fold increase in heart failure hospitalisations. Sleep problems are common in heart failure patients. The new data provides information that was lacking on whether sleep problems persist and whether they are associated with hospitalisations.

The study undertaken at the University Hospital of Linköping in Sweden included 499 patients that were hospitalised for heart failure. It was found that 215 patients (43%) had sleep problems at discharge from the initial hospitalisation whereas a third had continued sleep problems a year later. Patients who have persistent sleep problems were two times more likely to be hospitalised in the follow up period compared to patients without sleep problems.
