Perchance to Sleep: Ageing and Circadian Rhythm
The most common sleep disorders are restless leg syndrome, insomnia and obstructive sleep apnoea. The prevalence of these sleep disorders increases with age. Sleep is increasingly fragmented in older people. Total sleep time may be unaffected but the circadian rhythm is altered.
A study on sleep and circadian rhythm undertaken in the UK with 87 to 89 year olds using questionnaires and accelerometry showed that sleep patterns were impaired. The results of the affected sleep patterns were cognitive impairment, depression and other physical health problems. A striking difference between participants who had very regular and consolidated sleep pattern and those who had little or no discernible sleep pattern was noted.
