Obstructive Sleep Apnoea Common in Kids with Sickle Cell Anemia

childrenThe Sleep and Asthma Cohort Study has reported that approximately 41 percent of children who have sickle cell anemia suffer from a degree of obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS). Children with sickle cell anemia have an increased risk and prevalence of OSAS. The OSAS prevalence rates are higher than those reported in otherwise normal children.

According to Dr. Carol L. Rosen from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, children with sickle cell anemia should be regularly screened for OSAS which is treatable to avoid adverse health problems. Screening for OSAS and snoring should form part of health maintenance visits as per clinical practice guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatrics.
