Obstructive Sleep Apnoea Causes Myocardial Injury
A study has shown the independent association between sleep apnoea severity and increased high sensitivity Troponin T levels which is a marker of early myocardial injury. The study worked with 1645 middle age and older patients who were monitored for a median 12.4 years.
According to Amil M. Shah, MD, MPH, lead author of the study, the presence and the amount of high-sensitivity troponin elevation was seen in every category of OSA severity. This was in effect associated with a very high risk of incident heart failure. The categories of OSA severity were none, mild, moderate, or severe guided by the respiratory disturbance index.
