Obstructive Sleep Apnoea and Type 2 Diabetes — Examining the Link

diabetis testMore and more research has been undertaken to explore and understand the relationship between obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) and Type 2 diabetes. The connection between Type 2 diabetes and OSA is not fully understood and different studies are aimed at uncovering connections and common risk factors.

One such study by researchers at the University of Chicago indicated that frequently interrupted sleep can cause lipocytes and fat cells to become more insulin resistant, a precursor of Type 2 diabetes. The treatment of diabetes should minimise the effects of comorbid conditions to achieve better outcomes with the diabetes as well as OSA.
