Obstructive Sleep Apnoea and Atrial Fibrillation Is the Link Real?

heart rateStudies have shown that obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) can cause cardiovascular problems independent of any pre-existing comorbidities. The problem of OSA continues to raise concern among health professionals due to increasingly aging population and significant numbers of people with obesity. Obesity and age are two major risk factors for OSA.

Advances in diagnostic technology reveal a more startling statistic; that the prevalence of OSA in patients with cardiovascular disease is considerably higher than previously estimated. OSA is characterized by hypoxemia and hypercapnia which lead to vasoconstriction of the pulmonary artery and heart strain in the right hemisphere.
