Night Shift Work Linked To Obesity in New Sleep Study

night shiftAccording to research, sleeping during the day burns fewer calories than sleeping during the night. The findings therefore show that people who work night shifts have a high risk of developing obesity. The night shift work affects metabolism making individuals use less calories than they normally do over the course of the day.

Metabolism is affected by the mismatch between the circadian clock and sleep patterns. According to Dr. Kenneth Wright, Director of the Sleep and Chronobiology laboratory at the University of Colorado, low energy use is directly related to the lack of exercise and poor diet seen in night shift workers.
