New Study Reveals Link between Sleep Apnoea and Glaucoma
Researchers at Taipei Medical University have found a link between sleep apnoea and open-angle glaucoma. Glaucoma affects about 12 percent of the world population and is the second leading cause of blindness after cataracts. Untreated glaucoma affects peripheral vision and will damage the optic nerve leading to blindness.
Compared to people without sleep apnoea, sleep apnoea patients were 1.67 times more likely to suffer from open-angle glaucoma within five years of diagnosis. The study only establishes a link between sleep apnoea and glaucoma but further research will be required.
The researchers recommend that doctors should let sleep apnoea patients be aware of the high risk of developing glaucoma.
