New Study Helps Explain Links between Sleep Loss, Diabetes

young manResearch published in Diabetologia, the journal of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes, reveals that the lack of sleep causes pre-diabetic conditions in healthy young men and raises the blood levels of free fatty acids. The study supports previous findings that lack of sleep leads to disrupted fat metabolism and compromised insulin activity in regulation of blood sugar.

The study sought to explore the effects of sleep loss on the 24 hour levels of fatty acids in the blood by working with 19 healthy men between 18 and 30 years. The findings of the study were that three nights of four hour of sleep caused elevated blood levels of fatty acids from 4 am to 9 am. The effect was that insulin activity in regulation of blood sugar was reduced.
