New Research Suggests Glaucoma Screenings for Sleep Apnoea Sufferers

tiwanResearch undertaken in Taiwan has discovered that people with sleep apnoea are more likely to suffer from glaucoma. The study published by the American Academy of Ophthalmology sought to calculate the risk of developing glaucoma in people with sleep apnoea.

The study was undertaken at the Taipei Medical University and utilized population based data from the national health insurance medical records. They used the records of 1,012 obstrcutive sleep apnoea patients over the age of 40 years. Their findings were that the risk of getting open angle glaucoma in the first five years of OSA diagnosis was 1.67 times more than in the normal population.
