Little Sleep, Big Cost: Infographic
The National Healthy Sleep Awareness Project has recommended that an adult should get a minimum of seven hours of sleep every night for optimal health and alertness. However, in reality many people will only sleep for six hours or less each night. The loss of sleep has been implicated in a number of chronic diseases and other health problems.
Fewer sleeping hours are common in professions that are based on work shifts such as mining and quarrying, manufacturing, transportation, healthcare and social assistance, public administration, and in the accommodation and food service industry. Sleep loss will increase the risk for problems such as stroke, diabetes, obesity and coronary heart disease.
