Lack of Sleep Is an Epidemic That Can Prove Fatal

Obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome is the most common sleep disorder and accounts for the highest mortality and morbidity compared to any other sleep disorder. OSA is characterized by cessations in airflow during sleep.

Research undertaken over the years has shown that OSA and snoring are two conditions directly and indirectly to cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. The cardiac problems include stroke, cardiac failure, hypertension, cardiac rhythm disorders, atherosclerosis and increased platelet activation. New information about sleep apnoea continues to emerge especially in the areas of treatment and associated morbidities.
