Insufficient Sleep Is a Public Health Epidemic

workSleep is now considered to be very important to public health. Sleep insufficiency is now a public health epidemic that is linked to automobile accidents, industrial accidents, medical and occupational hazards. The lack of sleep will contribute to difficulty in performing some tasks.

Individuals suffering from sleep deficiency are most likely to suffer from chronic conditions such as diabetes, cancer, hypertension, depression, obesity and increased mortality. Sleep will also caused diminished quality of life and reduction of productivity.

Sleep insufficiency can be caused by wide scale number of societal factors that include round-the-clock access to technology and work schedules, but sleep disorders such as insomnia or obstructive sleep apnoea are implicated.
