Increased Prevalence of Sleep-Disordered Breathing in Adults

obese manSleep disordered breathing is a common problem among adults and is associated with a number of harmful conditions. The major cause of sleep disordered breathing is obesity and the obesity epidemic in the world today reflects the scale of the sleep problem.

Prevalence of sleeping disorders was contracted between the periods of 1988 to 1994 and 2007 to 2010 using data from an ongoing community based study at the Wisconsin Sleep Cohort Study. The participants in the study were observed and tested at four year intervals. The prevalence rate was calculated as a function of age, sex and body mass index. It was noted that prevalence rates increased substantially over the last two decades.
