How Sleep Deprivation Decays the Mind and Body

tired mindSleep is a body function that is not fully understood. It is thought that sleep is the process via which the brain is able to shut down. Other theories emphasize the importance of sleep in regulating body hormones. All these theories are usually non-conclusive.

Sleep deprivation is another phenomenon that is as misunderstood as sleep itself. Lack of sleep has been associated with problems such as long term memory impairment, impaired cognitive functions, psychosis, and hallucinations. Sleep deprivation is even linked to chronic conditions such as high blood pressure, bipolar disorder, impaired immune functions, hypertension, and diabetes. Due to the adverse effects of sleepleesness, it has been even used as a torture method for prisoners.
