How Much Can An Extra Hour’s Sleep Change You?

long sleeping timeThe amount of sleep that an individual gets on average continues to decline as we grow older. The Sleep Council reports that the average Briton gets about six and half hours of sleep a night. The culture today assumes sleep is a luxury that can be foregone.

A study at the Sleep Research Center of the University of Surrey was done with volunteers who normally got between six and nine hours of sleep. One group was made to sleep 6.5 hours while the second group slept 7.5 hours. The findings were that with sleep deprivation, more than 500 genes were affected. Genes associated with processes like inflammation, immune response and response to stress became more active with less sleep.
